Meta is ending its third-party fact checking programme and introducing something that is similar to “Community Notes” by X. The announcement drew mixed reactions across social media.

Reactions from X leadership

Reacting to the news, Elon Musk wrote on X: “If you aren’t sure of something, ask @CommunityNotes! Notes are only published if a significant number of people who have historically disagreed agree that a note is accurate.”

A user replied to this saying, “Elon’s making sure the truth comes out no more hiding behind biased filters.”Another user said, “One of the best features of X. I don’t see how any other platform will come close.”

Linda Yaccarino, chief executive officer (CEO) of X Corp, posted on X saying, “Fact-checking and moderation doesn’t belong in the hands of a few select gatekeepers who can easily inject their bias into decisions. It’s a democratic process that belongs in the hands of many.”

X has a field day

Many users trolled Meta for “ripping off” the Community Notes idea from X.

A parody account by the name NOT Elon Musk said, “Zuck has announced he is copying community notes. There is nothing Zuck will not copy.”

Another user said, “This is why Zuckerbucks is stealing your idea… Like I said long ago, Community Notes changed the game forever”

Other reactions

A satirical page called Babylon Bee posted on X, “Guy Who Said Facebook Was Not Suppressing Free Speech Announces Facebook Will Stop Suppressing Free Speech.”

A user shared a news story by The New York Times which said “Meta Says Fact-Checkers Were the Problem. Fact-Checkers Rule That False”. To this, Musk replied, “Lmaooo”

In an interview with Fox News, Meta’s new chief of global affairs, Joel Kaplan, said, “X has been doing it for a while. We think it’s working really well and we’re going to adopt that system.” He also added that Meta’s independent fact checkers were “too-biased” due to which they are changing the content moderation system.
