Kumar, who was with upgrad for a little over five years, told ET that he left to pursue his own venture, also in the education space. “The opportunities are there and there is interest from private equity players. My venture will be largely a brick-and-mortar setup in partnership with PE players,” Kumar said.
Kumar had been with Upgrand since 2019 and been a key part of multiple acquisitions such as Harappa Learning (a BodhiTree company), Centum Learning (a Bharti Group company), TalentEdge among others. He worked closely with Upgrad founder and chairman Ronnie Screwvala, and has previously had stints at Reliance Jio as VP & Head of Strategy (special initiatives) and consulting firms like KPMG and PwC.

ET had reported in October that Upgrad cofounder and managing director Mayank Kumar has stepped down from his executive role to start a new venture, even as Screwvala is taking a more active role at the firm, coinciding with. Saurabh Deep Singla, earlier the CHRO at Upgrad has also moved on from the firm after almost 2.5 years. Earlier this month, he joined online B2B marketplace IndiaM as CHRO.
