The denial came after a Bloomberg report suggested that Chinese authorities might explore selling TikTok’s US business to Musk if the US Supreme Court upholds a ban on the app. The court is set to rule on a law requiring TikTok to sell its US operations or face a ban by 19 January.
“We can’t be expected to comment on pure fiction,” a TikTok spokesperson told BBC News.
Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that one option being discussed could see Musk’s social media platform, X, take over TikTok’s US operations. The report estimated TikTok’s US business to be worth $40–50 billion. However, it is unclear how Musk would fund such a deal or whether he would need to sell other assets.
Last year, the US government passed a law demanding TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, either sell the app’s US operations or shut it down. The law is set to take effect a day before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
