Sporting a T-shirt, denims and US Polo Assn. sneakers, Zepto co-founder Aadit Palicha joked on stage that he may have been the “only person” who took the ‘Silicon Valley’ dress code seriously.

But if sneakers belong to the Valley bro fashion code, then it was the standout star of The Economic Times Startup Awards 2024. Taking inspiration from the land where jeans, t-shirts and hoodies reign supreme, many founders turned up clad in the ultimate hipster status symbol. It was a sea of sneakers – Onitsuka Tigers were the top choice, followed by the Roger Federer co-created On brand and a smattering of Nike Jordans and cleats.

Power kicks

The sneaker might seem like a fashion afterthought, yet pick the right pair and it conveys power and nonchalance, belonging to everyman and yet an exclusive club.

Lenskart’s Peyush Bansal sported a chic pair of the Singaporean brand Pedro, while Sushant Goel, co-founder of Third Wave Coffee, flaunted his Nike Jordans.

“I’m wearing my campus [Stanford] T-shirt with these US Polo sneakers that I got from Zepto,” Palicha told ET, with a broad grin. Rohit Kapoor, CEO of Swiggy Food Marketplace, said that he has a collection of Onitsuka Tigers. “But I decided to match these peach sneakers with the colour of my sleeve lining.”

But the new kid on the block was Swiss brand On Running. Flipkart’s Kalyan Krishnamurthy joined the bandwagon with a navy pair, while Curefoods founder Ankit Nagori, who sported a cobalt blue pair, said, “On is my favourite brand. I run, play a sport and I think these are the best shoes right now, for any event.”

The sarees parted the sea of sneakers, especially those of the Suta founders and sisters Sujata (in peach) and Tanya Biswas (in lime-green). Archana Rajaram, founder of Rajaram Legal, stepped out in a smartly-fitted white jumpsuit, Laina Emmanuel of Brainsight AI chose a mint-green Van Heusen pantsuit, Myntra CEO Nandita Sinha accessorised her head-to-toe Mango ensemble with H&M earrings and Kinara Capital founder Hardika Shah said that she picked out her quirky dress from New York designer Nanako.
