Ecommerce major Meesho saw record orders on the first day of its festive season sale, nearly double compared to the figure of last year, and also surpassed daily orders by over three times.

Festive season sales kicked off this weekend for ecommerce companies led by Amazon and Flipkart launching their annual sales, to cash in on the most lucrative time of the year for online shopping.

Meesho said it saw nearly 6.5 crore unique customers on its mobile app on Day 1, and about 1.5 crore app downloads ahead of the sale. Meesho Mall saw a significant growth in orders compared to last year, with nearly 45% of these orders coming from first-time customers.

“What a record-breaking start to our annual Mega Blockbuster Sale!” founder Vidit Aatrey said in a post on X. “On behalf of everyone at Meesho, thank you 🇮🇳 for trusting us as your go-to online shopping destination! This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to break even more records together this festive sale season.”Amazon’s Great Indian Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion Days are also underway. Festive season sales are the most crucial event for ecommerce platforms in terms of sales. To prepare, they make substantial investments in advance to increase capacity and introduce new features. Generally, ecommerce platforms see an uptick in demand for high-value items across categories, including high-end smartphones, electronics, appliances as well as fashion during these events.

This year, quick commerce platforms like Zepto-owned Blinkit, Instamart and Mumbai-based Zepto will also be participating in the festive rush, aiming to capture a greater market share.

ET had reported on September 12 that nearly 71% of Indians intended to shop online this festive season. This was based on a survey conducted by market research firm Ipsos Research, commissioned by Amazon India. Reflecting a rise in consumer confidence and intent to shop, nearly 50% of respondents planning to shop online said they would spend more on festive shopping this year compared to last.
