Google has said it plans to appeal, which can be done within 30 days of the final judgement, regardless of the final outcome. This could mean that the case could go on for years, into 2027 even.
- The trial, which ended last year, examined Google’s confidential deals with smartphone manufacturers, including Apple. The judgement said that in 2020, Google held almost 90% of the US online search market and and a higher share — up to 95% — in mobile devices.

This was the first time in a generation that a Big Tech corporation was accused of illegal monopolisation of the ad tech industry and the corruption of legitimate competition by the U.S. government.
- On September 12, 2023, Google defended its practice by saying that its high quality services is what won them their market share. This was during a trial before Judge Amit Mehta of the US District Court for the District of Columbia
Kevin Murphy, a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, who was one of the expert witnesses of the government, said Apple and other tech giants launched a rivalry between Google and Bing (by Microsoft) in an attempt to get large payments from Google, which makes money from searches by placing ads based on user data it collects.
