Amazon’s largest seller Cocoblu gets set for a quick commerce foray

Cocoblu Retail, the largest seller on Amazon, has set up a new entity for the quick commerce business, per a recent filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). Cocoblu’s parent, Rattan India, has renamed one of its existing entities to Cocoblu Quick Commerce and amended its objectives to shift the company’s focus from wholesale trade to retail business, clearly indicating its focus area—quick deliveries.The filings from earlier this month were sourced from the business intelligence platform Tofler.

This comes at a time when Amazon India has begun testing its quick commerce pilot with staff in Bengaluru and is expected to launch the services to the public in the coming weeks.

Cocoblu Retail, already a top seller on Amazon, would be the main seller for Amazon’s quick commerce service, Tez. Post-closure and divestment of top merchants—Cloudtail and Appario Retail—Cocoblu has consistently been among the top sellers on Amazon.

Working with Cocoblu, which already collaborates closely with Amazon and handles a significant portion of its volumes, would provide much-needed support to the quick commerce ambitions of the US etailer in India. Amazon is seen as a late entrant to the market, even as players like Flipkart Minutes and BigBasket are beginning to scale and make some impact on existing leaders—Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart.


A spokesperson for Rattan India declined to comment, while an email sent to Amazon India did not elicit a response.

Rattan India also houses consumer brands that are sold on Amazon via Cocoblu Retail, and these products may also be added to the quick delivery service. Amazon is expected to start the service with limited stock-keeping units, focusing on grocery and other essentials.Besides Cocoblu, Clicktech Retail, RK World Infocom, RetailEZ, and EtradeOnline are among other top sellers on Amazon India. Clicktech had acquired Appario Retail as part of Amazon’s plan to divest stakes in sellers on its platform.

ET first reported on January 13 about Amazon starting to test its quick commerce offering, Tez, in India with employees in select Bengaluru neighborhoods.

The total addressable market for quick commerce is estimated at around $45 billion and is expected to grow to $77 billion by 2025, per a recent report from Bernstein.
