Google FTC complaint: Why did Google ask FTC to nix Microsoft-OpenAI pact

Tech giant Google has asked the Federal Trading Commission to step in and break its rival Microsoft’s exclusive agreement to host Open AI’s technology on its cloud servers, according to reports.

Google made its statement to the FTC as part of a broader investigation into Microsoft’s agreement with OpenAI. It said that the agreement’s exclusivity could mean higher costs for customers since they would have to necessarily purchase Microsoft’s cloud services.

Though rare, this is not the first time that the tech giants have feuded publicly, both on the global stage and in India.

As early as 2012, Google co-founder Sergey Brin had said that companies such as Apple and Facebook were a threat to online freedom as they had created “walled gardens” which ran the risk of threatening any innovation beyond the platforms of these two companies.

In the recent past, Facebook launched a campaign against Apple in 2020 accusing the company of threatening “free internet” through its policies on personal data tracking and privacy.

“Apple’s latest update threatens the personalized ads that millions of small businesses rely on to find and reach customers,” Facebook had then said in a note on its website.

Apple hit back against the allegation and said that Facebook should get its users’ approval before using personal data to track them and that a user should have the choice of allowing or disallowing apps to track them.

Their feud, however, was not limited to the issue of allowing or disallowing the tracking of users by the use of personal data.
