Google: Google excited about progress with Pixel phones: TN industries minister

Tamil Nadu industries minister TRB Rajaa on Tuesday said he had met representatives from Google as a continuation of the meeting that took place with the search giant while the state’s Chief Minister MK Stalin was on his 17-day visit to the United States.

“Happy to note that the team was excited about the progress with Google Pixel phone, now proudly Made in TamilNadu,” Rajaa said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He reiterated that only a few weeks ago, the state government had signed an MoU for the Google Tamil Nadu AI Labs.

“We’re already making great progress,” he continued. “The AI Lab will be open soon! We also had other exciting discussions! Lots in store for Tamil Nadu!”

On August 30, Google said it had exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu to drive technological advancement and foster innovation in the State.


The company said the collaboration will focus on initiatives in key areas such as AI start-up enablement, skilling, and industrial ecosystem enablement including MSMEs to create impactful, scalable AI solutions.

The MoU exchange took place in Google’s Mountain View office, in the presence of Stalin and Rajaa and was between Amit Zavery, GM/VP and Head of Platform of Google Cloud, Nanda Ramachandran, Vice President, Pixel Business Unit, Google and Guidance Tamil Nadu.Under the MoU, Google said it would work with Guidance, the Government of Tamil Nadu’s nodal agency for investment promotion and facilitation, to support the development of a robust AI ecosystem. This includes providing access to advanced technologies and resources, with an emphasis on empowering individuals, businesses, and government entities to leverage AI for inclusive growth and progress.

The company said it is exploring collaborations under a few key pillars that included manufacturing of Pixel 8 phones, skill development and education, startups and innovation and enabling MSMEs and the rural economy.
