Centre may offer more time to submit views on DPDP draft

The government may consider extending the deadline to submit views on the draft of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act rules by a fortnight beyond February 18, senior government officials said.

The ministry of electronics and information technology had released the draft of the rules earlier this month and given stakeholders 45 days to submit their views.

The industry consultation, the first of many planned by the IT ministry, was held in New Delhi on Tuesday. The government will continue to have a series of exhaustive and extensive consultations on the draft to ensure that all stakeholders’ views are heard, union electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters after the consultations.

The government, he said, aimed to strike a balance between innovation and regulation with the rules to help innovation grow. Representatives of companies such as Snap, Google, Meta, and OpenAI, industry bodies like Nasscom, Broadband India Forum and DSCI, and some lawyers attended the first industry consultation on the draft rules. One of the major concerns raised during the discussions was the additional compliance burden that was likely to be placed on companies since they would have to send out fresh notices to even legacy users of their products and services, a senior company executive who attended the meeting said.

Some stakeholders raised concerns about the data localisation requirements proposed in the draft rules and said these regulations could clash with the rules put in place by other nations, sources said.
